Megyn Kelly shouldn’t be shunned for doing her job — exposing the monster in Alex Jones

Sometimes my own people make me sick. By that, I mean liberals and journalists.

Take Megyn Kelly for instance. She is right to interview the beast. If we persist in keeping a double standard for what is freedom of the press and what is oppression, then we are no different than the bigots and conspiracy theorists who condemn us.

Think about this: We are righteously furious at President Trump for trying to strangle freedom of the press, while at the same time we are self-righteously furious with Kelly for exercising her rights as a journalist and lawyer to interview the hate-mongering conspiracy lunatic Alex Jones.

Liberals and the media alike have even gone so far as to urge NBC to kill the interview. Hell, even Jones wants it killed. Clue: If the left and the right are both equally angry, that means she’s done her job.

Yes, Jones is a despicable, misinformed, certifiable paranoid loudmouth, bigoted freak — but he’s a paranoid freak with a big internet following of like-minded haters.

Liberals and journalists alike are shunning Megyn Kelly for giving Alex Jones a platform.

Who better to interview this nightmare on the American landscape and expose him for the demon he is — to an audience who may only know him from media reports — than a tough former defense attorney who has been known to bring the most powerful men to their knees by exposing them for the idiots they are?

Do we liberals and journalists REALLY believe that freedom of the press and freedom of speech should only be given to those with whom we agree?

I shudder to think that the answer is a big, loud, resounding yes.

Well, damn! Shouldn’t we then just do away with, say, presidential debates, because if you don’t have several personalities you can’t agree with all the candidates — and as the last round of debates proved, some of them were downright despicable, misinformed, certifiable paranoid loudmouths, bigots and freaks, too.

OK, one of them won, but still that doesn’t mean Kelly in particular didn’t do a number on that misinformed loudmouth’s credibility.

I have interviewed my share of monsters. Isn’t that the responsibility of a journalist? How can we ever find out what is in the mind of the wicked if we don’t interview them; if we don’t expose their hate?

If we really believe we should never do that, than Dan Rather should have not sought out Saddam Hussein before the 2003 invasion, where the dictator challenged President Bush to a televised debate. Should Diane Sawyer have never done a televised interview with mass murderer Charles Manson, should Katie Couric have been banned from interviewing Edward Snowden? OK, not every interview was as hardball as it could have been, but each one exposed cracks in the armor of the beasts.

Most recently, both liberals and conservatives objected to both the New York Times and the JuJu Chang’s interview on ABC’s “Nightline” of transgender military documents leaker, ex-con Chelsea Manning. Why? Didn’t we all want to know why she felt compelled by conscience to release 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks? I sure did.

If we could go back in time would I as a journalist have wanted to interview the Idi Amin, Hitler, Stalin? You bet.

It’s easy to have opinions if you’ve never faced down the enemy and stood up to the powerful in person. Without that, we leave it to the likes of Alex Jones to spread lies, hate and conspiracy theories to other uniformed haters.

No doubt, but that Alex Jones is a monstrous 9/11 denier, who also called the Newtown massacre of 20 innocent 6 and 7-year-olds — along with six school employees trying to protect them — nothing but “a government hoax.”

The parents of the Newtown victims, in fact, have just uninvited Kelly to their fundraiser. That is their right and privilege. They feel that her interview will give the beast airtime. As a parent, I fully understand their positions.

But remember, too, that Kelly is not just a lawyer and a journalist, she is also the mother of three children. Do you think she interviewed the Newtown conspiracy theorist because she sympathized with him — or because as a mother, a lawyer and a journalist it was her duty to confront the beast?

We reporters can’t kill the beasts if they remain in their lairs. We can only do that by exposing them, like vampires, to the light.
